【演講摘要】
I am interested in understanding students’ meta-attention, i.e., the awareness of their distracted attention and regulation of their attention within the personal learning environment (PLE) premised on social media. Nevertheless, in PLE, students’ attention has been greatly challenged by information irrelevant with learning on the social media. Using a self-developed attention monitoring and regulation scale (i.e., Online Learning Motivated Attention and Regulation Strategies: OL-MARS, Wu, 2015), the profiles of students’ attention awareness and regulation exhibited differential effects on their well-being as well as behavioral and cognitive outcomes. The scale measurement invariance between genders and its criteria was also confirmed with external validity (Wu & Cheng, 2019). In Wu (2017), I further demonstrated that students’ attention state and their regulatory strategies mediated the effect of their multimedia multitasking self-efficacy on their final course grade within the PLE. Based on the study finding, I recommended a positive attribution strategy to foster students’ willful control of their attention (Wu, 2017). What’s more, note taking strategy and mild time pressure were also confirmed to be effective and efficient approaches to reduce students’ task-irrelevant behaviors during their online information searching task in the open-ended online environment (Wu & Xie, 2018).
